The art world is buzzing with excitement as the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale is set to make its grand return in 2024. If you’re an art enthusiast eagerly awaiting this cultural extravaganza, we’ve got all the inside information you need. From the dates to the curatorial vision, participating artists, and notable artworks, this article covers it all.

A Date for Your Art Calendar

Mark your calendars from February 20 to May 24, 2024, because that’s when the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale is back in action. The 2024 edition promises to be a grand spectacle that you won’t want to miss.

    Location: JAX District, Diriyah, Riyadh

The biennale will take place in the JAX District in Diriyah, Riyadh, a locale known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning architecture. This year’s edition will utilize seven halls, courtyards, and terraces along Wadi Hanifa, offering a unique blend of nature and art.

    The Curatorial Framework: “After Rain”

The theme for the 2024 Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale is “After Rain,” which symbolizes renewal and revitalization. This theme draws inspiration from the earthy scent that follows rainfall, signifying a fresh start and rejuvenation.

    The Artists’ Lineup

This edition of the biennale will feature 92 artists from 43 different countries, including 30 artists from the Gulf region. Among the renowned names participating are Hamra Abbas, El Anatsui, Joan Jonas, and many others, each bringing their unique creative perspective to the event.

    Exploring Complex Histories and Landscapes

“After Rain” invites artists to explore the complex history of the region, the relationship between humanity and nature, the built environment, and the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can expect to see numerous newly commissioned works that engage with the ongoing social transformation.

    Highlighting Notable Collaborations and Artworks

One standout feature is the documentation of Saudi futurism since the 1940s, a project led by Saudi artist Ahmed Mater and Berlin-based photographer/filmmaker Armin Linke.

Emerging Saudi-based Yemeni artist Sara Abdu offers a multisensory experience with towers constructed from artisanally produced bars of soap, a unique take on cleansing rituals. Meanwhile, Saudi artist Mohammad AlFaraj presents a new work incorporating palm trees and sound, reflecting on the landscape of Al Ahsa, one of the world’s largest oases.

    Outdoor Installations

The JAX District’s outdoor spaces will host new spatial installations, including a 70-meter-long canopy by Azra Akšamija and a shading structure made of recycled sheet glass by Anne Holtrop.

    Communal Gatherings during Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan in March to April 2024, the biennale will emphasize communal gatherings around sharing food. Britto Arts Trust invites the audience to harvest, cook, and eat in a bamboo architectural structure. NJOKOBOK operates a juice and tea bar, while Lucy + Jorge Orta invite the public to participate in a meal in the JAX District’s alleyways.

    Biennale Encounters

The Biennale Encounters series, launched in April 2023, features performances, concerts, and poetry readings, creating an ongoing conversation with new audiences. This edition is informed by research trips to regions across Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, providing a deep and meaningful cultural experience.

    Meet the Curatorial Team

The curatorial team behind the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2024 is led by globally renowned curator Ute Meta Bauer as Artistic Director and comprised of DBF curator Wejdan Reda (SA) and curators Rahul Gudipudi (IN), Rose Lejeune (UK), and Anca Rujoiu (RO). This diverse team brings a wealth of experiences and insights, extending the biennale exhibition with artistic formats such as performance, sound, research-based practices, and digital forms.

A Journey of Interaction and Contemplation

Ute Meta Bauer, the Artistic Director, describes this biennale as a multifaceted and multi-format experience, a place for both interaction and contemplation. It brings together artists from different parts of the world with artists from Saudi Arabia and the wider region, all engaged in shared issues around land, water, food, and healing practices.

    The Cultural Transformation

The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale is a significant initiative by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, contributing to the cultural transformation in Saudi Arabia. It’s a testament to the power of art in bridging cultures and fostering creative dialogue.

Now, if you’re eager to be part of this incredible artistic journey, mark your calendar for the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2024. It promises to be an event like no other, blending tradition, innovation, and creativity in the heart of Diriyah, Riyadh.
